Marvin Gaye’s family recently accused Pharrell of perjury after an interview with Rick Rubin. In 2015, Pharrell, Robin Thicke, and the song’s publisher had to pay almost $5 million to the Gaye family for reportedly infringing on Marvin Gaye’s song “Got to Give It Up.”
According to reports, Pharrell said “I did not go in the studio with the intention of making anything feel like, or to sound like, Marvin Gaye” However, Marvin Gaye’s family is saying Pharrell perjured himself during an interview with Rick Rubin, saying he “reverse engineers” a sound from old records, and said “I did that in ‘Blurred Lines’ and got myself in trouble.”
Because of that, the Gaye family says this constitutes fraud and evidence of perjury. They are seeking a whopping $3.5 million in attorney fees.
