Types of hormone therapy

There are 3 types of hormone therapy for prostate cancer. They can be used both individually and simultaneously.
Luteinizing hormone agonists (LHRH) block the pituitary signal, which causes testosterone production by the testes. The drugs leuprolide (Lupron®) and goserelin (Zoladex®) are LHRH agonists. They are injected once a month or every 3, 4 or 6 months.
Antiandrogens are drugs that block the attachment of testosterone to cancer cells. Therefore, testosterone does not contribute to the growth of cancer cells. One antiandrogen drug is bicalutamide (Casodex®). These are pills that you need to take once a day.
If you are taking bicalutamide, take this medicine daily at the same time, regardless of the meal.
An employee in your care team will tell you when to start taking this medicine.
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonists are drugs that stop the production of testosterone. One of the GnRH hormone agonists is degarelix (Firmagon®). This medicine is administered as a subcutaneous injection once every 28 days.

I want to tell you that hormone therapy can be of different types.
