The word "plastic" in plastic surgery doesn't have anything to do with the plastic material we're all familiar with! The term has its origins in the Greek word plastikos which means to mold or restructure - and this is the basic function of this type of surgery. People who have suffered injuries, burns and accidents and have had their appearance destroyed require extensive skin and muscle work to regain it. Today, plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery is also a choice for aesthetic reasons or to alter one's appearance. Weight-reduction, correction of features like the nose, eyelids, eyebrows, forehead or chin, use of fillers to smoothen wrinkles or sagging skin, liposuction, tummy-tucks, chin-tucks, face-lifts, anti-aging surgery and the use of materials like botox, removing warts, stains, tattoos, lesions and freckles are other types of plastic surgery.
