The CAE essay tests the following skills of the examiner:

• Ability to build arguments on a given topic.
• Ability to express your opinion clearly and support your idea with examples.
• Ability to adhere to a formal academic writing style.
• The ability to organize your answer logically, correctly dividing into paragraphs.
• Ability to accurately and correctly choose lexical and grammatical means.

The purpose of the essay is to discuss a specific topic, express a personal opinion, and provide arguments and reasons for substantiating this opinion.

These opinions are NOT NECESSARY to use, this is at the request of the essay writer. One, if they are used, then they should be rephrased as much as possible in their own words in a formal style and at the Advanced lexical level.
